GATEWAYS & ROUTERS

What is the purpose of the Image Gateway?

The Image Gateway serves two purposes.  First, it acts as the traffic director.  It receives images from your modalities and directs them to various reading stations and to the image archive.  It also makes sure that all images received from modalities are backed up on its system of removable hard drives.   If your facility has multiple workstations, messages are received by the Gateway from the workstation when a doctor has begun a diagnosis.  The Image Gateway, through its locked server technology, makes sure that all other copies of that study sent to other workstations are removed so that another physician does not diagnose it.

Can I operate a system without an Image Gateway?

Yes.  Images can be routed directly to a workstation.  The workstations can act as a temporary archive.  It is possible to build a workstation with a robust enough archive so that it could store images for a significant amount of time for a small facility.  However, in most cases, you will want to store your images for the long term on an archive, in which case the Image Gateway is the most effective way to route images.

For physicians who are merely reading images for a hospital and/or doing “over reads” for other radiologists and have no need to store the images because they are stored elsewhere, there would be no need to use Image Router to receive data from the modality.
